It is a species cultivated for its fruit. The plant grows as a gherkin-like vine. The unripe fruit is consumed as a seasonal vegetable in a similar way to a zucchini. Unlike unripe fruit, ripe fruit is very fibrous and is used to make exfoliating bath sponges, known as loofahs.
