The grafted quenepa tree from Cultivos Borinquen is available for $70, with delivery throughout Puerto Rico. It is an option for those who want to add a fruit tree well known on the island to their property and watch it develop from a young age.

The quenepa tree, scientifically known as Melicoccus bijugatus, can be planted in a spacious garden or an area dedicated to growing fruit. Before planting, consider the space it will need as it grows and its distance from buildings, other trees, and power lines.

Benefits

Growing this fruit tree allows you to observe its shoots, branches, and flowers while learning about the process that leads to harvest. It is also an opportunity to share gardening activities with your family and keep a fruit connected to many Puerto Rican memories close to home.

A grafted quenepa tree is produced by joining plant material from a selected tree to a rootstock. This method preserves the characteristics of the propagated material. Growth and fruit production also depend on the environment, care, and adequate pollination.

If you are expanding your collection of fruit trees in Puerto Rico, plan for the long term. Being grafted does not mean the tree is a dwarf variety or ready to produce fruit immediately.

How to Plant and Care for Your Tree

Choose a sunny location with good drainage and enough space for the canopy and roots to grow. Avoid areas where water remains pooled.

When transplanting, carefully remove the container and keep the root ball intact. Plant the tree at approximately the same depth it was growing before, keeping the graft union above soil level.

Water after planting and check the soil moisture before watering again. Adjust watering frequency according to rainfall, heat, and soil conditions.

Inspect the leaves and new shoots regularly. If you use fertilizer, follow the product instructions and adjust care to the tree’s stage of development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tree grafted or grown from seed?
This tree is grafted.

How long does it take to produce quenepas?
We do not have a confirmed timeframe for this young tree. The start of fruit production depends on its development, growing conditions, and pollination.

Can a single tree produce fruit?
Quenepa typically bears male and female flowers on separate trees, although exceptions exist. Being grafted does not guarantee that it will produce fruit on its own. Ask about the specific tree’s reproductive characteristics before planning your planting.
