Blueberries grow as shrubs. You can consider growing yours in a pot with good drainage or in an area prepared for its needs, paying particular attention to the acidity of the growing medium.

Benefits

Caring for a seed-grown blueberry plant allows you to observe its growth and learn about a plant that needs specific conditions to thrive. It is an activity you can enjoy at home and share with your family.

When the plant reaches its reproductive stage and has the right conditions, it may flower and produce fruit. Ripe blueberries can be enjoyed fresh or used in smoothies, yogurt, and desserts.

Because it is grown from seed, the characteristics of the plant and its fruit may vary. Growth and production will also depend on the variety, climate, pollination, and care it receives.

How to Plant and Care for Your Plant

To begin growing blueberries, prepare an acidic, loose growing medium with good drainage. These plants generally need a pH of approximately 4.5 to 5.5. You can measure the pH before planting and check it periodically.

If using a pot, choose one with drainage holes. When transplanting, handle the root ball carefully and plant it at approximately the same depth it was growing in its original container.

Place the plant in a location with good light. Acclimate it gradually if it will receive more sunlight than before, and observe how it responds during hot days.

Keep the growing medium evenly moist, avoiding both waterlogging and allowing it to dry out completely. Check the moisture frequently, since heat and pot size affect watering needs.

Before adding agricultural lime or any product intended to change the pH, check the plant’s needs and follow the product instructions.
