General plant information:
Eryngium foetidum is a perennial and annual tropical herb of the Apiaceae family. Common names include recao, cilantro, Mexican cilantro, and broadleaf or longleaf cilantro.
Our “Recao”, common name in the Islands of Puerto Rico, is produced entirely on our small farm. We grow from traditional seeds and fertilize with natural composting. ANY CHEMICAL is added during any phase of the production process. These are untreated seeds, meaning they are clean and have not been treated with any chemical, biological or physical methods.
It is widely used for seasoning and marinating in the Caribbean, particularly in Panama, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago, and in the Amazon regions of Peru. It is also widely used in Thailand, India, Vietnam, Laos and other parts of Asia as a culinary herb. It dries well, retaining good color and flavor, making it valuable in the dried herb industry. It is sometimes used as a substitute for cilantro (cilantro in British English), but has a much stronger flavor.
